So, while backing up my files, some things happened, and I ended up losing a lot of information which includes the rest of "How I did it", I'll probably get around to it again, but not for a while. Along the journey the main NPC saved each of them from something bad happening to them, and then, when they were almost to port a horrible storm thrashed their ship.
